Preface :-

  • Section 30 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act establishes a Special Committee for Women and Child Welfare.
  • Under Section 30 (2) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, the scope of work, powers, and duties of the Women and Child Welfare Committee are determined by a special resolution passed by the Municipal Corporation with the votes of at least two-thirds of the municipal members present and voting in its meeting.
  • Under Section 30(3) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, two members from among the Women and Child Welfare Committee members are appointed as the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson.
  • As per Section 30 (1)(a) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, at least 75 percent of the members of the Women and Child Welfare Committee shall be women municipal members.
  • The Women and Child Welfare Committee in the Municipal Corporation has 15 members.
  • The Women and Child Welfare Committee is expected to meet once every month.

Powers and duties of the committee:-

  • To carry out work under Section 30(3) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act
  • All work/decisions taken on behalf of this special committee require the support of at least two-thirds of the total members of that committee.
  • According to the government decision, 5 percent of the total budget must be reserved for the Women and Child Welfare Department.

Powers and duties of Women and Child Welfare Department:-

} Government Decision   No. Sankirna 2005 Q. No. 156/05/ Nav -20 dated 30/12/2006 and Government Decision No. MUM -2021/ Q. No. 385 / Nav-17 dated 29 March 2022, the Women and Child Welfare Department has notified the scheme for the development of. E.g.. Various professional / technical training - Ms-Cit, Beauty Parlor , Hospitality / Paramedical etc. Also, various welfare schemes have been included for poor and needy women and children.

}   Training schemes/programmes, etc. for the Women and Child Welfare Department are carried out from the provision of 5% of the net revenue remaining after deducting the committed expenses from the total income in the budget.

Details of the schemes being implemented/upcoming by the Women and Child Welfare Department ( 2022-2023)
  • A scheme is being implemented to provide financial assistance for the marriage of daughters of destitute/widowed/divorced women.
  • Educational assistance is provided for the education of children of destitute/widowed/divorced women.
  • Financial assistance is provided to women suffering from cancer.
  • Sanitary napkins/Dettol soap have been supplied to girls in grades 7 and 8 in municipal schools.
  • Self-employment materials are distributed to poor and needy women in the municipal area. (Idli maker, Gharghanti machine, multigrain flour machine, etc.)
  • Under the Women and Child Welfare Department, various free vocational/technical training courses have been started at Mahila Bhavan, Kanakia, Mira Road for the poor and needy women and girls of the city to become self-employed. Beauty parlor, sewing class, mehndi, soft toys. Cooking, baking, cloth and paper bags, Judo Karate and Yoga, English Speaking, MSCIT, Basic Computer. DTP, Vehicle Training, etc.
  • A health camp was organized for women and children in the slums of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation area, and they were examined by various specialist doctors like gynecologists and pediatricians. Free sanitary napkins were also distributed at the said place.
  • The Beti Bachao Yojana public awareness program is being implemented in the slums. For this, public awareness and dissemination is being done through necessary pamphlets and good advice in all the slums.
  • Pregnant mothers and mothers who come for delivery are provided free healthy food when they are admitted to the Municipal Hospital. This scheme is being implemented at the Municipal Corporation's Bharat Ratna Indira Gandhi Hospital.
  • Under the Women and Child Welfare Committee, beds with cradles have been supplied for the children of women who have given birth at Bharat Ratna Indira Gandhi Hospital.
  • In recognition of the meritorious performance of the students of class 10, bicycles have been distributed to the students who have scored more than 95 percent marks and bags have been distributed to the students who have scored more than 90 percent marks. Also, bicycles have been distributed to the girls of class 08 in the Municipal School.
  • The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation has purchased a mammography machine for breast cancer screening and has made it operational at Indira Gandhi Hospital. Due to this, free breast cancer screening is being done for poor and needy women.
  • One-day workshops were organized on Warli painting, planting and care of ornamental trees, as well as advanced beauty parlor (bridal makeup), etc.

   Various initiatives and schemes, as mentioned above, are implemented through the Women and Child Welfare Department.

Under the Women and Child Welfare Department, Rs. 5000/- each will be provided to destitute and widowed women who have benefited from the My Mauli scheme in the financial year 2021-2022.
